Lenny Collard, the leader of the Aboriginal Centre on campus played a native instrument, the Digeridoo, for us at our "Welcome to the Country" BBQ.
Mr. Collard is actually my professor for Contemporary Indigenous Issues. He played it and then had the boys all play and have all us girls vote on who would be the "King." Ivan was the best one, and it was his birthday so he had to be the winner!
He told us all about the different birds in our area, especially the ones who make
whining noises and wake everyone up early in the morning. Good thing I'm a heavy sleeper I guess. He told this beautiful story about them though, how they call out early before sunrise to awake the Sun God and this is why they are such treasured birds to the Aboriginal people even today.
